Jake Nordstrum

Artistically I focus mostly in abstraction, but will do the occasional portrait as well. I'm heavily influenced by Picasso and Pollock. I remember seeing Ambroise Vollard by Picasso for the first time and just starring at it forever. I didn't know that art could be like that, and I wanted to explore that avenue.
With most of my paintings I don't have a clue as to what I'm going to do before I sit down to paint, which is both liberating and terrifying at the same time. The painting takes shape with each decision based entirely on composition and design. Most of the time I just stop when it looks finished. The majority of my titles are borrowed from verses or themes in the Bible. I like the juxtaposition of abstract art which is very open to interpretation, and Christianity, which traditionally is viewed as very black and white. The pairing of the two makes for some really interesting tension.
Overall my main objective is to create beautiful paintings that speak to the viewer on multiple levels.
I paint in oil and acrylic on both canvas and paper
